Research Interests

Professor Sarabandi’s research focus encompasses a wide range of topics in the area of applied electromagnetics. His research activities in this area cover a span of 25 years and can be grouped into the following general areas:

• Microwave and millimeter-wave radar remote sensing including forward and inverse model development, controlled measurements, and system design and fabrication. He has been principal investigator on many NASA projects related to remote sensing of terrestrial targets such as vegetation, soil moisture, and snow using synthetic aperture radars (SAR) including polarimetric and interferometric systems. He has also applied the same techniques to detection and identification of point targets in clutter environment.
• Antenna miniaturization and reconfigurable antennas for wireless applications. This includes the application of novel topologies and architecture and use of novel materials (metamaterials) and substrates.
• Wireless channel characterization for performance assessment of wireless systems. Research efforts in this area encompass simulation tolls using analytical and numerical methods as well as measurements systems and scaled models.  
• Millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave subsystems and components with applications to radar imaging (collision avoidance, autonomous vehicle control, security, etc.).   Novel fabrication technology based on ceramic sterolithography.
