Ruei-Che Chang receives Rackham International Student Fellowship

Ruei-Che Chang, a second-year PhD student in computer science and engineering, has received a Rackham International Student Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding academic record and potential. The award will support his ongoing research in CSE for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Ruei-Che is advised by Prof. Anhong Guo. His research focuses on the design and implementation of customizable interactive systems meant to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

One of his recent research projects involved the design of OmniScribe to create immersive audio descriptions of 360-degree videos for blind and visually impaired individuals. This work was published in the Proceedings of the 2022 Annual ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (UIST). Ruei-Che also presented one of his ongoing projects at UIST 2023, where he demoed SoundBlender, a sound rendering framework that uses sound manipulators to increase mixed-reality awareness.

The Rackham International Student Fellowship recognizes international graduate students that demonstrate exceptional academic performance and potential. It is specifically meant to assist individuals who may not be eligible for other kinds of support due to citizenship. Nominees are selected based on their strong academic record, progress toward their degree, and outstanding academic and professional promise. 

This funding will support Ruei-Che’s ongoing research in CSE, as he works to develop and study customizable interactive systems that are accessible to everyone.
